How To Use dōTERRA Essential Oils

Three simple ways, hundreds of benefits

Essential oils have changed the way we live - and we love it!

Aromatic

Breathe in from the bottle, add a drop to your palms and inhale, or diffuse 4-6 drops in your diffuser.

Topical

Mix with 1-2 drops of carrier oil, like fractionated coconut oil, and apply topically to target specific areas of the body such as muscle or joint discomfort or tummy discomfort.

Internal

Take a drop under your tongue, add a drop to 4oz of water or liquid, take in a capsule or add to recipe when cooking.

Aromatic Use

This is the easiest way to utilize oils in your home. Our sense of smell is a very powerful tool. It's through our smell receptors that there's a direct connection to the limbic system.

The limbic system controls many things including emotions, behavior, and memory. This powerful connection means essential oils can have a profound effect on our bodies when used aromatically to stimulate the limbic system.

Common ways to use aromatically are:
  • An essential oil diffuser
  • Smelling directly from the bottle
  • Dropping oil in palms and cupping palms around the mouth and nose
Many oils have uplifting effects on your emotions and others provide calming and grounding effects. In addition, many oils can help promote a restful sleep when used aromatically during the night and others can help get rid of unwanted odors and germs in the air.

Topical Use

Applying oils directly to the skin is a great way to help them absorb into your body. Because essential oils are lipid soluble they easily penetrate the skin and when absorbed can provide localized benefits.

It is advised to always dilute essential oils when applying them on the skin to avoid sensitivity. Dilution is a process in which essential oils are mixed with a carrier oil that helps “carry” the essential oil onto the skin.

Some of my favorite carrier oils are:
  • Fractionated coconut oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Argan oil
  • Rosehip oil

Internal Use

If you’ve never used essential oils internally before, it might seem strange to consume something so powerful and potent. However, pure essential oils are derived from abundant plants in nature, offering a wide spectrum of benefits when used internally.

Because our bodies are designed to metabolize and process compounds found in nature, we are already equipped to metabolize essential oils. Essential oils are merely high concentrations of natural compounds—the parts that give plants their taste and smell.

While some essential oils are never appropriate for internal consumption, plenty of oils can be safely taken internally and processed by the body.
